Are you considering a career as a real estate appraiser? Would you like to get more details regarding residential real estate appraiser licensing? The Appraisal Education Center offers free real estate appraiser career seminars in Chicago land and local suburbs.
Aspiring appraisers in Illinois are required to take pre-license courses, which are licensed through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Specifically, one must complete three real estate appraisal courses: Appraisal Principles (30 hours), Appraisal Procedures (30 hours) and the Standards and Ethics course (15 hours). Each course concludes with a final exam.
Once a student successfully passes each of the three pre-license courses, a certificate of completion is issued to the student. The student can then apply for the state test. The application must include proof that the student attended and passed all three pre-license courses.
The testing service works with the student to find a testing facility location for the student, preferably in close proximity to their place of residence or work. After the student completes the state exam, they are given their test results while they are still at the facility. If the student passes, they are notified that they passed, but not given their score. If the student fails, they are given the actual score and provided with a breakdown of score by category to help them better understand strengths and weak areas. Test retakes are allowed.
Proof of passing the state exam is submitted to the state by the appraiser and the appraiser receives their official appraisal license in the mail.
